More Panelling Up!

Paul was able to get some of the panelling up in the wheelhouse today.  It's really starting to come together!

We Have Light!

We were able to get the lights up in the wheelhouse and captain's bunk this weekend.  The lights in the wheelhouse are L.E.D. day/night lights that are white in the day and red at night.  The red light at night will allow us to read charts and see in the wheelhouse, but won't interfere with being able to see out the windows.

In the captain's bunk we put the old lights back up where they were before the demo.

Captain's Bunk Varathaned

I put another coat of varathane on the walls in the Captain's Bunk today.  You can really tell the difference between today's pictures and the ones from the 13th.

Water Storage/Ballast

When Dave's Dad came up a couple of weeks ago he brought with him 2 55 gallon plastic soy sauce drums for extra water storage on the SHAD.  Yesterday I filled them up with water in the hopes that the additional 800lbs of weight on the starboard side would help even out the list we have.  We're still listing due to the starboard fuel tank being empty.  I didn't really notice a difference in the list.  The drums are going to come in very handy on our long weekends out at Taku Harbor.  This brings us up to around 230 gallons of water.  YAY!!

What Do You Mean We're Taking Down All The Trim?!

I was so excited when Dave, Josh and I went down to the boat on Mother's Day and saw all of the trim up in the Captain's Bunk.  That was short lived when I found out that all of the trim had to come down to be varathaned.  WHAT!?  So, Dave and I have been putting coats of varathane on the trim for the last week.

I've also been varathaning the 3 pieces of panelling that will be around the hatch through the wheelhouse roof.  We're trying to get as many coats as possible on these pieces as they will likely be scuffed as we're going through the hatch.  The more varathane, the more protected the wood will be.

Captain's Bunk: Ceiling, Panelling, Trim... DONE!

All of the ceiling, panelling and trim is done in the Captain's Bunk, and I love it!!

When I took the pictures, the lighting upstairs made the color look very dark and inconsistent.  The second picture is the most true to the color.

Dry Rot Removal

There was some dry rot in one of the walls in between the Wheelhouse and Captain's Bunk.  Dave decided to just tear out all of the rot and replace it with new wood.  Dave and his Dad chisled, sawed, pryed and bashed out the rotten wood.  Once it was out they replaced it with two pieces of 1 1/4" plywood screwed together; much better!

Hanging The Panelling

By Saturday the stain was dry enough to start hanging the panelling in the Captain's Bunk.  YAY!!

One of the walls in the bunk has a couple of recessed reading lights in it.  Paul used his jigsaw to cut out the holes for the lights.

Pop Visits The SHAD

Dave's Dad is in town for a couple of weeks.  He's been down at the harbor helping Dave & Paul for the last couple of days.  We're really enjoying having him here and glad he can finally see it in person!

Staining The Panelling

Dave and I picked out a light cherry stain for the oak panelling and trim that will go up in the Captain's Bunk and Wheelhouse.  I really love the color!

Painting on the stain
This is before the stain was wiped off.  Dave was a little worried about how dark it was.
It was much better once the stain was wiped off!  I love the grain in this panelling.

Here's Dave applying the varathane to the panelling.

We set up the propane heater to help speed up the drying process.

The Ceiling Is Up!

Dave and Paul got all of the ceiling up in the wheelhouse and Captain's Bunk.  We are getting so close and it is really satisfying crossing things off of the "to do" list!

Dock Booty!

Ok....get your mind out of the gutter!  Harbor patrons have long been leaving items they no longer want at the top of the gangways for other patrons to pick up. This is harbor Freecycling.  These items range from clothes, grills, toaster ovens and dishes to food, boat gear and books. We call this Dock Booty.  Last week Dave found a nice set of dishes at the top of the gangway.  Now we have this great set of dishes, for four, for the SHAD!  One man's junk is another man's treasure!

Clean For Now!

Throughout this whole process we've been in varying states of total mess everywhere!  I finally have one spot on the boat this is clean!  YAY!  I know it's not going to last long; as you can see we're in the process of tearing the formica down from the walls.  Oh well, it's clean for now.

Making Progress!

Over the last couple of weekends we've been trying to get down to the boat evenings and weekends and we're finally making noticable progress.  Sometimes I don't see it until someone comes down that hasn't been there in a while; thanks Tara for helping me see the progress we've been making!!

We now have the whole "upstairs" insulated and wired.  Now we're ready to put in the ceiling material and get the panelling stained and up.  Hopefully we'll be getting on that this weekend!

We put spacers in the ceiling bays to keep the insulation from touching the ceiling.  This should allow for air circulation which should keep it from condensating up there.  When we pulled the ceiling down on both levels last year we were shocked at how wet the fiberglass insulation was; you could ring the water out of it.  We should not have that moisture problem now.

After we put in the spacers we stuck the rigid foam insualtion up in the bays.
